Cycle Recycle Website Launches
What is Cycle Recycle?
Cycle Recycle is a project set up by KCA (UK) in Thanet to provide a bridge for those people successfully completing treatment for substance misuse and low level mental health problems.
It contributes to their continuing recovery by offering a six month work placement where they will practice skills which can then be transferred into the workplace.
Why Bicycles?
Bicycles are relatively simple machines which haven't fundamentally changed in design for around 100 years. In fact, some older ones are often better than their mass produced modern counterparts.
They don't require sophisticated tooling and most people can learn at least the basics of bike maintenance - basic safety checks, puncture repairs, gear adjustments - during their placement.
They are relatively safe machines to work on because they don't require power tools, although the odd splinter or grazed knuckle is almost inevitable.
Bicycles have a low carbon footprint (even more so when re-used), are cheap to maintain and promote healthier lifestyles.
They are easy to get interested in; the least likely workshop participant will be heard to say 'I was out the other day when this person rode past me and their gears clearly needed adjusting, I was tempted to call after him and offer to do it for him'.
